Who Else Should I Speak To?

Depending on the work, you may need to involve other specialists.
Your builder will work with many of these specialists on a regular basis and will be able to refer you.

ARCHITECT: Professional drawings will be required for larger, more complex work and any work requiring planning permission

LOCAL PLANNING AUTHORITIES: Extensions to your home or alterations to a period property may require planning consent. Details can be found in the Planning section on your local government website. An architect is the best person to advise.

BUILDING CONTROL: Structural alterations to your property must be assessed by approved building control officers. You can use your local government building control department or employ an approved private firm.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER: Drawings and/or calculations will be required where structural alterations are to be made to your home e.g. walls knocked down or an extension.

IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO SPEAK TO YOUR NEIGHBOURS ABOUT THE WORK
Building works are disruptive. Make sure your neighbours are aware of what will be happening.
